To Be or To Have

Or Etre Et Avoir (in French) is a documentary about a teacher, Georges Lopez, who teaches elementary school kids in rural France. He teaches 12 kids from kindergarten to fifth grade and also lives in the second floor of the school house. The film highlights his “back to the old days” teaching style. Anyway, he’s such a dedicated and genuinely good teacher that he made me want to be come a teacher too. The documentary is very slow paced but I guess that represents the patience he shows to the students. He retired in 2004.

L to R: Georges Lopez, Marie (yes! Asian in rural France), JoJo (so cute!), and Alize.

They have class outside when the weather is nice. They also take random picnics.

Apparently in 2004, Lopez sued Nicolas Philibert and the film production. Sounds really sleezy but Lopez believed that the film makers exploited the children, their families, and himself because Lopez claimed that he was told that the film would be shown for educational purposes. Instead, the film became an extraordinary success in France and won top honors in film festivals.

I was watching this while I was at work. I should be fired. I also get to use the PA system in the gym. The power is awesome.
