The distance between the older son and the father is farther than the younger son and the father.
I am currently swamped with every imaginable thing so posts will be infrequent. But all is good. All is good.

Henri Nouwen wrote the most beautiful book about this painting, The Return of the Prodigal Son: A Story of Homecoming. His insights are expressed most eloquently and might satisfy your question.

Ithink that at sometime in our lives, we behave like the prodigal son, there is so much meaning, in this paint but what I can see and say about it. is that men without GOD is hopeless,Helpless, also I see GOD desiring mankind, also in the bible says, The father(GOD) Running to embrace His son, and This is a wonderful thing.

Find the book of Henri Nouwen, The Return of the Prodigal Son, and you wil understand the meaning of this painting of Rembrant.
It is realy a meaning full painting.

There is a meaning to every segment in this painting. Read Nouwen’s book and you will apply it to yourself and your relationship with God.

T he painting describes how no matter what we have done in our lives, We all need and crave the embracing love and forgiveness of our Father in Heaven.

The parable of the prodigal son is about more than the homecoming of the younger screwup son. The story doesn’t end there. It ends with the father going out to find the older son – the dutiful one who’d stayed home and never given his father any cause for worry – to ask him to come in the party that was celebrating his younger brother’s return.
It’s not just the younger son who’s loved and wanted. They both are. But the older son might just let his sense of self-righteousness keep him from joining his father’s party because he thinks his brother doesn’t deserve it.
So who’s left out? Or is it who stays away?
That’s where Jesus left the story, with that question hanging.
God’s love is unfair. (Thank God)

I am currently reading Nouwen’s book on the prodigal son. Although only part way through it, I am amazed at it. I love it. There is so much in this book to absorb that I can only read a little at a time. It would be a great book for discussion on a weekend retreat. It is a book that I will read over and over again.
