Obama and Peter Orszag, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, released a comprehensive appendix to Obama’s budget plan today. It is titled “Terminations, Reductions, and Savings.” There are about 121 programs that will be terminated or cut back, totaling $17 billion in savings for the upcoming year.
Most of the terminations have to do with military and defense. For each program, there are justification statements as well as citations for the justifications. The $17 billion might seem small compared to the proposed stimulus bill in terms of cutting back on pork spending but “how much” is always the debatable question. If you remember way back when Obama was campaigning, he told McCain and America that he would go “line by line” to weed out the unnecessary stuff; well, the document that was released today proved that he did do so in deciding which programs were wasteful.
Anyway, I think Obama is doing a swell job so far and about 65% of the country agrees with me. Keep chugging Chief.
